Dan Kildee, President of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint
Dan Kildee, the new President of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, spoke to the Rotary Club of Flint on May 9. He provided an overview of the foundation's work, including the power of of community foundations to leverage local giving to meet local needs. Their tag line is "For good. For Ever. For all," which reflects their commitment to justice.
The Community Foundation gives approximately $12 million in grants to local organizations each year. Of that amount, only a small portion-- about 4%-- is for discretionary grantmaking. The balance is distributed through endowment funds that the Community Foundation manages on behalf of other nonprofits and through donor advised funds it manages.
The Flint Rotary Charitable Foundation is an example of a group that has an endowment at the Community Foundation.
Prior to Dan's presentation, Mike Chaffee shared the last year's data on our club's giving to the Flint Rotary Charitable Foundation and the proceeds from it that have supported scholarships and local projects. In the last year, the number of Rotarians contributing dropped off by 70%. If you have not already made a contribution this year but intended to, you can still make a gift easily online here.
Next Up: Thirsty Thursday- May 15 at Market Tap from 5-7 pm. Bring a friend!
Market Tap is located on the upper floor of the Flint Farmers' Market. You can enter from the door on the north side of the building if arriving after usual market hours.
May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month
Asian/Pacific American Heritage recognitions have their roots in Congressional proclamations adopted in 1978 as a cultural week, and was expanded to the full month of May in 1992. May was chosen as Asian/Pacific Heritage Month because the first person to immigrate to the United States from Japan arrived in May 1843 and because the Transcontinental Railroad (which relied heavily on labor of Chinese immigrants) was completed in 1869. While people of Asian descent have made important contributions to every part of American life, they have faced discrimination including through the Chinese Exclusion Act, which barred immigration from China starting in 1882 and reflected common prejudices. It was not until the Immigration Act of 1965 that people from China were allowed to immigrate in any numbers (although people from western countries were still advantaged). The U.S. House and Senate both unanimously passed measures condemning the Chinese Exclusion Act in 2011 and 2012, respectively, and affirmed the importance of respecting civil rights and constitutional protections for everyone.
Congratulations to Joe Fioroni, who was presented with his Paul Harris Fellow+1.
Being a PHF+1 means that a person has contributed a total of $1,000 to the Rotary International Foundation not once, but twice. Individuals may also be gifted with a Paul Harris Fellow by someone else.
Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary. Please congratulate Joe on this milestone!
New Member Welcome
Dillon Murray was introduced to the club as our newest member. He has wasted no time joining in- he has already completed his first service activity after volunteering at last month's tree planting activity. Please give Dillon a hearty welcome!
